Torsion chair N.1 is a part of Torsion Furniture No.1 “Robotic Bend Furniture” collection. The traditional craft of bending has always been a complex and time consuming process in manufacturing, requiring moulding and casting or expert carpentry. There are limits to what can be achieved with these techniques. It´s time to push those limits with 21stcentury innovation. Benedikt Stonawski investigates the process of robotic thermoplastic bending. This proves to be a highly versatile way of creating complex curves. He showcases what is possible in ‘Torsion Furniture No.1’, highlighting the creativity and aesthetics of modern automated furniture production. These are products that would be very difficult to make using traditional methods. It is sleek minimalism with a playful baroque ornamental twist in the details. The pieces are made a 100% of Corian(DuPont) robotic bend strips and plates, handcrafted fitted together. The No.1 collection was first presented at the gallery Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week 2017.
Benedikt Stonawski is an Austrian product designer, from Vienna. He is 25 years old and graduated at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Having a background as a carpenter he is trying to push his craft skills with innovative technologies. His work is ranging across various fields.
